The assignment
Pretty much every Mudd engineer makes a hammer in E4. You get a drawing, raw stock, and time in the shop, and you leave with a hammer that actually works.
How I made it
I milled the head, starting by squaring up the stock and then cutting the features on the drawing one at a time. The handle got turned on the lathe. I spent a lot of time measuring, and I learned quickly that the order you make cuts in matters, because one bad step can leave you with nothing flat to clamp onto.
Where it led
This is the project that got me into the machine shop. I'm a Machine Shop Proctor now, so I help other students through this same hammer every year.
